The Vatican on War on Terrorism
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.
>It was on the news today that the Vatican said that
>a forcible response to terrorism was justified.
I don't think the Pope should be involved in this struggle. The militant Islamics understand this war to be a continuation of their struggles against the Holy Crusades, lead by the Pope nearly a thousand years ago. There is also increasingly talk of turning this into a holy war on "our" side -- turning Christians, Jews, and Hindus against Islamics. I don't need to tell you how much more of a mess we will have on our hands if this type of uprising talk continues.
We don't need the sanction of the Pope, we need the sanction of pagan rationality.
Every effort should be made to separate this war from any religious considerations whatsoever. That's one reason I am proud of GW's speech before a joint session of Congress, where he said we are fighting for FREEDOM rather than Christianity. Remember, it wasn't that long ago that GW was saying America is a Christian country based on Christian values. I, for one, am glad he took the more secular tact.
