Did Atlas Shrug Off Metronet?
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.
An interesting thing happened on the way to the Internet--my
former ISP, Texas Metronet, Inc.--evidently crashed and burned
while in the process of doing a major upgrade to nationwide dial-
up. They provided me with good service over the past six years, but
evidently anything remaining on their servers, including old email
and my art oriented web site (fortunately, I have several copies
available for re-up-loading), is not available.
However, that's not the most interesting part of the story. The
situation is being discussed on the newsgroup
dfw.internet.providers under the heading "Metronet.com?" and one
of the participants named Ken replied:
"I was talking with a friend last night and described the situation.
And he asked 'Who is John Galt?'"
The most interesting aspect of this comment is that its meaning is
evidently well known, because no one asked what it meant on the
rest of the thread!
