LTE Gets Reply
From Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.
I picked up a copy of the University of Dallas newspaper, "The University
News," this Wednesday to find that my recent LTE, about not taking evil
seriously, was replied to in a very long guest commentary diatribe that
parsed nearly every single sentence; in essence giving me a double entry
for my ideas. I plan on replying in a guest commentary of nearly 750 words,
but won't know if it will be published for several weeks.
Though the individual who replied can't be serious, I thought you'd be
interested in something she said after a few paragraphs of her blasting away.
"Now, forgive me, because I am not well versed in the philosophy of Ayn
Rand. Perhaps I should request her books be added to the [University of
Dallas] core curriculum in some way. I will start a petition immediately."
That certainly got me revved up ;)
I don't think her reply overall was very well focused, but mine certainly
will be. It will center on the following claim of hers:
"Evil is real and should be taken extremely seriously; otherwise there
would be no need for religion at all -- not even the fundamentalist one,
which leave no room for the 'enjoyment of life.'"
