Senate to Naturalize Elian?
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.
As you know, I contacted my Senators and Representatives about a
month ago regarding the Elian Gonzalez case. I was especially
outraged at the Miami raid and express my concerns. I just
received a letter from Phil Gramm, Senator of Texas, stating
that, he, too, was outraged at the Miami raid.
Part of his letter reads: "One element of this unique case seems
clear: Elian's mother died in order to secure a life of freedom
for her six-year-old son." He goes on to say he would like for
there to be a resolution agreeable to all the family members
currently in the US, but "If no such solution proves feasible, I
believe that Elian should be permitted to stay in America and to
have the opportunity to achieve all of the dreams that his
mother had for him."
The particular bill introduced earlier this year is S. 1999
(related bills were filed by both the House and Senate). You can
read these bills at:

I didn't know this bill was still alive, but evidently it is.
Perhaps the Miami raid outraged them enough that they will take
action? Please, contact your Senators and Representatives and
let them know you would like this bill (and related ones)
passed. It may be the only way to undercut the INS, especially
after the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling stating that only
the INS could make this decision.
