Speak out for Elian's individual rights
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.
I just got off the phone with Mark Davis (local conservative
talk show host on WBAP 820 AM), telling him that I was glad he
was taking his position that Juan's parental rights come first,
because it shows that the conservative stance on family values
is fully compatible with communism. He was thrown for a loop,
but we continued the conversation, and I was able to get a plug
in for the Ayn Rand Institute and the Free Elian web site at
capitalismmagazine.com.
I urge everyone who has the ability to keep their wits about
them regarding this issue while discussing it with those who say
Elian should be returned to Cuba speak out in defense of Elian
and his Miami relatives. I am fiercely proud that Laranzo and
Marisleysis Gonzales are Americans, and we should not let them
down in the face of being smeared by the media as law breakers,
kooks, and "Cuban radicals."
You may be on hold for a long time if you decide to call your
local radio talk shows, but that can be beneficial, as I was
able to calm down a bit from my fury and speak coherently.
For a 21 year old American citizen, Marisleysis has more courage
than I would have thought possible -- especially during the CNN
news conference. I was honored to have witnessed it.
<HB: Marisleysis is a real heroine. If you watched Fox News Channel, you
would see a lot of her impassioned, articulate statements.>
This country is getting to the point where the only people willing to
stand up for individual rights in the face of adversity are the
immigrants and a few intellectuals. Historically, the same thing
happened in Ancient Rome shortly before its collapse -- let's
not let history repeat itself.
