"Well-founded Fear" an uncoming PBS Documentary
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.
As I was surfing the web looking for more information on the
Elian case, I was directed from the INS site to an upcoming PBS
special on political asylum applications for the United States.
Interesting timing, as it is supposed to air June 5, 2000. I
wonder if they think Elian will still be around, or if this will
be a good way of CYOA for the INS?
>From the web site:
www.pbs.org/pov/pov1999/wellfoundedfear.html
"The law says you can offer asylum if you find that someone has
a 'well-founded fear of persecution.' Three times a day, your
job is to decide their fates. Political asylum--who deserves it?
Who gets it? With unprecedented access, filmmakers Michael
Camerini and Shari Robertson enter the closed corridors of the
INS to reveal the dramatic real-life stage where human rights
and American ideals collide with the nearly impossible task of
trying to know the truth."
I can just see it now: "How were we to know Castro would parade
Elian around like a puppet on a string and a propaganda trophy,
even though he's been saying that for months now? After all,
it's so hard to find out the truth about these matters." (Maybe
you should have tried calling him on his cell phone to ask him
-- just say you are Juan Miguel!)
There really isn't much more information on the site about what
will be revealed.
