Will Ye page 7
When he had dug up the entire floor of the cave -- finding only solid rock beneath the soil -- he became quite exasperated. "Can you give me another clue?" "Will ye mortals never learn!" Sourjack held his hands out to her, showing that they were bleeding and bruised. "Now look here," he said, "it’s not that I mind getting cuts here and there in the pursuit of a treasure, but if there isn’t one here, could you save me the effort and tell me so?" Smilerina turned livid, as a long shiny rod appeared in her hands. Pointing it at him, sparks flew out towards his feet as she yelled: "Will ye mortals never learn!" Running as fast as he could -- and Sourjack was among the quickest of his village -- he ducked behind the large rock near the entrance to the cave once again. And even though the Scrolls had warned him that fairies had an odd way of doing things, he still thought that this bit of wisdom gave him little or no insight into what he was supposed to do when a fairy girl got angry at him and tried to smote him with a fire-rod. Tending mushrooms was certainly much easier and much less hazardous! "It had better be a good treasure to be worth all of this!" he yelled at her. "Will ye mortals never learn!" "Is that all you can say?" "Will ye mortals never learn!" Sourjack sighed. Maybe he wasn’t at the right place, he wondered, as he took out the evil note and read it carefully. Well, there was no doubt about it. The treasure was in the cave of Mount Doom, at least according to the map. But then he noticed something that had escaped his attention. Down in the lower right hand corner was a signature of sorts, a teeny tiny rendition of a smiling face.
