Where Ideas Are Brought Down to Earth!

Writings based on Objectivism, the philosophy of Ayn Rand

Ayn Rand's most popular novels are Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead which present her philosophy, Objectivism, in vivid characterizations. Metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, esthetics, and  politics are the five main branches of philosophy that she identifies. Utilizing her methodology, one can be rational about all aspects of life. These essays present my understanding of Objectivism.

World Trade Center Rebuilding Concepts
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.

It looks like there are at least seven proposals on the table regarding the
rebuilding of the World Trade Center. More are to follow through some sort
of international competition, but none of them are going to be of the
heroic height of the original towers. From the inset of the link below, one
can see that most proposals have three or four towers, none of which seem
to be more than about eighty stories tall (not counting an aerial tower or
two). In other words, the buildings won't stand out from the rest of the
Manhattan skyline as did the originals.

<HB: However, Mayor Bloomberg has said that he wants to see other
proposals, that these are just a start (evidently he was dissatisfied).
Actually, this should be up to the land-owner or land-leasor, not the
government.>

World Trade Center Rebuilding Concepts
Thomas M. Miovas, Jr.

There is another design concept for the World Trade Center rebuilding that
is radically different from all the others. It consists of four cylinders
surrounding a fifth central cylinder -- all topped by a pyramid -- with an
enclosed memorial park at the base. If built to specks, it would be the
tallest building in the world and will virtually be a city in and of
itself. It looks incredibly massive in bulk relative to the other buildings
of Manhattan -- literally dwarfing everything near it.

I haven't decided if I like it or not, since I loved the simplicity of the
original twin towers, but the designer has the right attitude from what I
can tell from his web site. Derek G. Turner, who I know nothing else about,
is the designer. He refers to his design as "turning the other cheek,"
which, I believe is meant "tongue in cheek" as that phrase usually means
giving up one's values in the face of evil.

Running the web site requires a Macromedia Flash program, which you can
install from the site; and it takes a good long while to download using a
56k modem, though it's worth it.
